The Tassie Tigers will start the 2019 Hockey One season with a blockbuster Saturday night match against the Adelaide Fire at home at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre (THC) on October 5.
The official fixture for the 2019 Hockey One season was released today with the Tigers also hosting home matchdays against H.C. Melbourne on 27 October and Perth Thundersticks on 2 November, while making road-trips to Sydney, Brisbane, and Canberra from rounds 3-5.
Hockey Tasmania CEO Damian Smith said the first matchday is going to be a true Tasmanian sporting event not to be missed with a sell-out crowd expected at the THC.
“It’s fantastic for us to play our first games as the Tassie Tigers in the new national league in front of a massive supportive home crowd. Eddie Ockenden, Josh Beltz, and Jack Welch will lead our men, who will go into the season as one of the favourites, while our women will test themselves against a very strong Adelaide Fire team that boasts a number of world-class Hockeyroos.
“There will truly be something for everyone.
“Then to lead into the finals with two home matchdays against H.C. Melbourne and the Perth Thundersticks – I think Tasmanian sports-lovers are in for a real treat with literally the best hockey players in the world playing right here in our backyard,” he said.
Smith also threw open the call for a major Tasmanian company or organisation to get behind the team as their inaugural shirt sponsor.
He said the Tigers have already secured major backing from Government, shorts sponsor and partnerships with other businesses, but he wants the inaugural shirt sponsor to be an iconic Tasmanian brand to go with the Tigers’ unique position as the only Tasmanian club with equal women’s and men’s teams in the elite national domestic competition.
“The matches are going to be broadcast live across the country and we’ll be packing stadiums at home and away over the eight weeks of the first season. A commercial partner on our shirts that has the same unique Tasmanian branding and values as us is now just the final piece of our sponsorship puzzle.
“We would be delighted to hear from one of the major Tasmanian brands about being our shirt sponsor,” said Smith.
