Hockey Tasmania held its 2021 Annual General Meeting on the evening of Monday, 30 May 2022, at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre in Hobart and via video conference around the rest of the state.
The three major agenda items were: the receipt of the 2021 Annual Report and financial statements, which revealed an increasingly healthy budget and financial position; the election of two new Directors of the Board in Nic Duffy (re-elected) and Will Braid; and the appointments to the position of Hockey Tasmania Life Members for Janette Nielsen, Brendan Moore, and Peter Gaggin.
The 2021 Annual Report delivered a budget surplus of $100,728 - the third consecutive year of operation with revenue exceeding expenditure after a $300k loss in 2018 - as well as an improved working capital position (excluding long-term debt) now up to $607k. The financial statements also revealed that the long-term debt ($1m in 2019) had been further reduced post the reporting period down to $150k.
Hockey Tasmania reported a 6-year record in registered members, with the growth being fuelled by senior players returning to the sport - especially in the Masters competitions. For broader participation there was an over 60% increase in participants in school programs, engaging nearly 11,000 primary and secondary aged kids in hockey activities inspired by Eddie Ockenden and Josh Beltz winning the Olympic Silver Medal in Tokyo.
The Board positions of former Chair Ken Read and Director Lucy Byrne were vacated earlier in 2022. An election for replacement directors was held at the AGM with Nic Duffy (North) being re-elected for another term on the Board, and Will Braid (North-West) winning election for the first time.
Motions were moved and carried for Janette Nielsen, Brendan Moore, and Peter Gaggin be appointed to the positions of Hockey Tasmania Life Members. We congratulate them for earning the highest honour Hockey Tasmania can bestow. All three are highly-deserving and have long, dedicated hockey resumes which feature outstanding performance and service to our community.
Other matters resolved at the 2021 AGM were the confirmation of the minutes from the 2020 AGM and the re-appointment of Michael Derbyshire from Bentleys as our auditor.
A motion was moved and carried that the proposed adoption of submitted amendments to the Hockey Tasmania Constitution be deferred to allow members more time to consider the changes, and that a Special General Meeting be convened in a month to resolve this item.
In other business Mr. Colin Pearson of Launceston City Hockey Club made a statement to the members on behalf of the Officiating Committee.
