Aurora Energy Hooking Into Tasmanian Hockey

Published Thu 01 Aug 2024

Hockey Tasmania is thrilled to announce a multi-year sponsorship deal with Aurora Energy.

Hockey is played by thousands of Tasmanians across the state, with participation at all levels for both men and women, including juniors, seniors, and masters.

Aurora Energy’s sponsorship of Hockey Tasmania is targeted at engaging and attracting new hockey players through a Tasmanian hockey grassroots initiative that primarily supports youth involvement in the game.

The sponsorship will include ‘Hookin2Hockey’ kits and training for juniors, incentives to clubs to grow youth teams, training for goalies and coaching, and umpiring support.

CEO Nigel Clark said, as a community-focussed local retailer, Aurora Energy was aware of the many benefits of playing sport but also the financial challenges this can present, particularly with the current cost-of-living pressures.

“By making programs such as Hookin2Hockey free, Aurora Energy’s grassroots initiative will ensure hockey is easy to join and affordable for the parents of the children who play,” Mr Clark said.

“Sport is a key part of people’s lives. It promotes health and well-being whilst building social connections that are vital for living full and happy lives.

“We are so proud to be Tasmania’s only 100 per cent owned and operated energy retailer and to be part of the Tassie community. That pride extends to engaging in meaningful partnerships that contribute to making Tasmania a great place to live.”

Hockey Tasmania Chairperson Glenn Lucas said that hockey is an integral part of the Tasmanian sporting community, and a grass roots focus is vital to ensuring hockey’s continuing success.

“Hockey Tasmania is delighted to be working with Aurora Energy on this Tasmanian Hockey Grass Roots Initiative. This is a great package for not just our junior participants but the broader hockey community that supports them.”

Mr Clark said that Tasmania had a long and rich history of contributing to hockey on a national level.

“Over the years, hockey has been one of the quiet achievers in the Tasmanian sporting scene. We have provided many men’s and women’s representatives to national teams, way beyond what could be expected for a state the size of Tasmania,” Mr Clark said.

“The best example of this is of course our own Tasmanian Olympic flag-bearer, Eddie Ockenden, who is the most capped player for the Australian men’s team, the Kookaburras.”

Minister Nick Street said this is a great initiative that will help increase the number of young Tasmanians taking part in grassroots sport. “The Tasmanian Government wants all Tasmanians to be able to access the sport and active recreation pursuit that best suits them and this fantastic partnership will provide more opportunities for our young people to get into hockey.”

“Tasmania is a proud and strong hockey state with clear pathways in place so that young players who embrace the sport through this important initiative can be inspired to emulate their Tasmanian hockey heroes like Olympians Eddie Ockenden, Josh Beltz and Maddi Brooks,” Minister Street said.

Aurora Energy and Hockey Tasmania will work together over the coming years to deliver grass roots support in Tasmania, supporting its junior players as they grow and develop into the Olympians of tomorrow.
