Peri Buckley and Daniel Sproule HA Hall of Fame 2023
Published Wed 08 Feb 2023
Two Tasmanian former-stars of international hockey have been inducted into the Hockey Australia Hall of Fame, one an outstanding and trailblazing umpire and the other 188-game veteran for the Kookaburras.
Peri Buckley is an absolute legend of Tasmanian hockey, but stands out as one of our all-time great umpires with many of the local awards she won now named after her. Not just a brilliant and respected international umpire, she was also a trailblazer - becoming the first Australian woman to receive the FIH Golden Whistle (100 senior international matches). She attended 3 Olympics as an official, two of those as an umpire which included umpiring the 1992 Olympic Women's Gold Medal Match in Barcelona.
Daniel Sproule has been a famous face for Tasmanian hockey for a long time, playing with the Tassie Tigers at AHL level and achieving coaching success at the local senior club level, known for his skill, speed, and aggression. He played 188 international matches for the Kookaburras from 1994 till 2002, which included two Bronze medal-winning Olympic campaigns, a Commonwealth Games Gold, a Champions Trophy Gold, and a World Cup Silver.
Congratulations to Peri and Daniel! Thoroughly well-deserved.
