Shiraz (Grand Masters) Hockey Program
Over a decade ago a group of senior players, many of whom had just retired from the Masters competitions, decided they wanted to keep playing hockey but within a social setting.
As a result the Shiraz competition was created. The concept was simple; anyone interested in a game (women and men) met at the THC at designated time, mixed teams were created and the game commenced. The game lasted for no more than 1 hour, followed by a social debrief at the bar. Players paid a nominal fee for each game on the night they attended.
This has continued ever since, played at the same time as the regular Masters competitions over the summer. Tue 17 Oct 2023-Tue 05 Mar 2024. 17.15-18.15
In recent times the numbers of (generally older) players has declined, and so we are looking to raise awareness of the competition to increase the numbers of players participating.
Hockey Tasmania see this competition as an integral part of the Masters program, so we are keen to get as many people involved as possible.
If you are interested in getting involved in a game of social hockey with like minded (and like paced) hockey players and/or you would like more information, please contact the Shiraz (Grand Masters) coordinator John McCambridge.
