UMPIRE ACCREDITATION

How do I become an accredited Umpire?

There are four levels of umpire accreditation:

  1. Community Umpire Accreditation
  2. Level 1 Umpire Accreditation
  3. Level 2 Umpire Accreditation
  4. Advanced Umpire Accreditation

The Community Umpire Training Program is designed to train umpires in the basic concepts of umpiring including roles and responsibilities, applying basic hockey rules and safety and enjoyment.

How to complete the Community Umpire Accreditation

Step 1

Register for an account on the Hockey Australia learning platform HockeyEd. Please note that there is no fee associated with obtaining your Community Umpire accreditation

Step 2

Complete the online Hockey specific training program. This includes an applied learning quiz and takes approximately half an hour to an hour to complete

Step 3

A practical evaluation of one match as an umpire (45 mins minimum). Please contact your club to arrange your practical evaluation.

Level 1 Umpire Accreditation

The Level 1 Umpire Training Program is designed to train umpires in the fundamental concepts of umpiring including fitness, positioning, signals and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of players.

4 Steps to complete the Level 1 Umpire Accreditation

Step 1

Register for an account on the Hockey Australia learning platform HockeyEd. Please note that there is a registration fee of $40 to complete the Level 1 Coach accreditation.

Step 2

Complete the online Hockey specific training program. This includes an applied learning quiz and takes approximately one to two hours to complete.

Step 3

Complete a Practical Course conducted by Hockey Tasmania. Please contact Tania Barry for details of the next upcoming Level 1 Course.

Step 4

A practical evaluation of one match as an Umpire.

Level 2 Umpire Accreditation

The Level 2 Umpire Training Program is designed to train umpires in the essential concepts of umpiring including psychological and physical preparation, umpiring skills and tools, player management, communication, risk management and ethical responsibilities.

The program is directed towards umpires involved in the higher levels of junior or senior level of club/ school or representative hockey.

It is a comprehensive training program which involves:

  • a two-day course conducted by Hockey Tasmania
  • pre and post course requirements
  • practical assessment

Advanced Umpire Accreditation

The Advanced Umpire Training Program is designed to train umpires in the advanced concepts of umpiring including self-management skills, performance analysis, advanced hockey skills and techniques, rule interpretation, player management, co-umpire support, communication skills and risk management.

The program is directed towards umpires involved in a national under-age or senior national championship.

It is a comprehensive and challenging training program involving Course, practical sessions, applied learning, self-development requirements and a practical evaluation.

The Advanced Umpire Course will be conducted by Hockey Australia and dates will be posted once they become available. The Courses will be primarily conducted in conjunction with a National Championship.

Re-accreditation

All accreditation’s remain current for a period of four years.

At the conclusion of this time, accreditation holders are required to complete an updating procedure, according to the guidelines within each level.

There are three levels of Umpire Coach Accreditation

There are prerequisites which must be fulfilled before undertaking any of the Umpire Coach accreditations as below:

Level 1
Prerequisite       Level 2 Umpire

Level 2
Prerequisites     Level 1 Umpire Coach
Umpire Coaching experience

Level 3
Prerequisites     Level 2 Umpire Coach
Minimum Australian Umpire
Umpire Coaching experience at National Championships Level (incl. Under-Age)

Technical Official

There are three levels of Technical Official Accreditation

There are prerequisites which must be fulfilled before undertaking the Technical Official accreditations as below:

Level 1
Prerequisite       No prerequisite

Level 2
Prerequisites     Level 1 Technical Official
Technical Official experience in local competition

Level 3
Prerequisites     Level 2 Technical Official
Minimum Australian Umpire
Technical Officiating experience at National Championships Level (incl. Under-Age)

FIH Rules of Hockey Video Library

This is a joint project between the FIH Umpiring Committee and Hockey Rules Board. The Video Library is an excellent resource which provides a collection of video clips demonstrating the Rules of Hockey and their current interpretations.
