Tasmania’s Under 18 Boys have ended the 2019 Championships with a thumping 11-2 win over the ACT at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre, securing a fifth-place finish.
Tasmania scored early and often, with Joshua Commins (8′) kicking things off with a tremendous tommohawk before Joshua Brooks (9′) scored an incredible solo goal from the very next play.
Harvey Bessell (16′), Ashby Bingham (21′), Commins (26′) again, and Brooks (28′, 29′) twice more all added goals in the second quarter, smashing the territorians out of the match entirely.
Bessell (34′, 60′) added two more in the second half to earn a hat-trick, Alexander Hogan-Jones (50′) got his name on the scoresheet, and Brooks (54′) scored his fourth to end their tournament on a high.
Tasmania’s Under 18 Girls have finished the 2019 Championships in dramatic fashion, triumphing in a penalty shootout over Northern Territory 1(3)-1(0) to secure a ninth-place finish.
On a hot day after a long tournament the Girls started slowly and struggled to put together consecutive coherent plays. The temperature was rising off and on the pitch, as Tassie racked up an impressive card count of 3 greens and 3 yellows after struggling to keep their cool. When NT broke through for a third-quarter goal it looked like it was all over for the home side.
But despite playing much of the final quarter with just 9 players the Tassie Girls dug deep and showed true spirit, fighting out every last second, and were rewarded when a brilliant run from Lucy Cooper drew a foul from the NT goalkeeper and a penalty stroke with just 6 minutes left on the clock.
Captain Phillida Bridley (54′) stepped up and calmly slotted the stroke to draw the sides level, which took them to a penalty shootout on the final whistle. What followed was an extraordinary effort from goalkeeper Evie Dalton, saving three penalties in a row whilst Bridley, Julia Gunn, and Jessica Chesterman all scored their penalties to give Tassie a 3-0 shootout win.
